What happened
On October 19, 2026, JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE: JPM) reported that it financed and facilitated more than $230 billion in transactions in the first year of its Security and Resiliency Initiative. That activity spanned roughly 380 transactions. The total likely reflects deal volume the bank funded or helped arrange, rather than money it spent.
The initiative launched in October 2025 with a 10-year plan to facilitate, finance and invest $1.5 trillion in industries critical to economic security and resilience.
Why it matters
JPMorgan Chase has built a team of more than 35 professionals for the initiative, including 13 managing directors. Hundreds of bankers across the firm support that team, according to the bank.
Todd Combs leads the bank's Strategic Investment Group. The group invests the bank's own capital in companies of long-term strategic importance. It also runs the initiative's direct equity investments. Co-President Doug Petno told CNBC the bank may expand the equity program beyond its initial $10 billion allocation.
This year, the initiative expanded to Europe and Canada. JPMorgan said many technologies, supply chains and industrial capabilities critical to resilience cross national borders. Nearly one-third of the initiative's activity in the past year occurred outside the United States.
Critical minerals show that concentration. China supplies 91% of refined rare earths, according to JPMorgan. It also supplies up to 94% of rare earth magnets. We think that concentration points to why a U.S. security effort may need partners abroad.
By the numbers
JPMorgan Chase committed $5 billion of its equity allocation in the initiative's first year. That money was committed through its Strategic Investment Group and covers half of the initial $10 billion equity allocation.
The bank's roles vary from deal to deal:
- JPMorgan took part in a funding round of nearly $1.4 billion for Hadrian, which builds automated factories for precision weapons.
- It led an $800 million round for Castelion, a hypersonic missile maker.
- The bank put $75 million into Perpetua Resources, which is developing an Idaho mine that is expected to hold an antimony reserve, for a 2.7% equity stake.
- JPMorgan is helping arrange financing for Korea Zinc's $7.4 billion critical minerals processing project in Clarksville, Tennessee.
- In August 2026, the bank issued a conditional commitment to lend up to $500 million to a U.S. government-backed entity created to purchase rare earth minerals from Brazilian producer Serra Verde.
- JPMorgan advised L3Harris on a $1 billion Pentagon investment in its missile business, completed in April 2026.
- The bank was lead financial advisor on the $46.1 billion consolidated take-private deal for power provider AES in the first quarter of 2026.
- JPMorgan was a joint lead bookrunner for Fervo Energy's initial public offering, which raised $1.89 billion in May 2026.
Those roles range from shareholder to lender to adviser, which suggests the deal sizes measure what the bank worked on rather than what it put at risk.
JPMorgan Chase stock traded at $335.19 as of October 21, 2026. Analysts' average price target is $365.45, with a buy rating, as of October 21, 2026. The fair value is $330.00 as of October 21, 2026.
